Who is entitled to a Travel Voucher for Beneficiaries?
Persons under 65 years of age who are entitled to a "Travel Voucher for the Beneficiaries" are
- persons receiving an old age pension or a benefit subject to an equivalent assessment (old age or disability pension paid by the Hungarian Artists' Public Foundation; pension or disability pension received from an ecclesiastical legal entity; old age pension established by the legislation of an EEA State or by agreement),
- a person in receipt of a widow(er)'s pension, orphan's allowance, parental pension or work accident-related survivor’s pension,
- a person in receipt of a disability benefit who, on or before 31 December 2011 was entitled to a Group I or II disability pension or whose health condition is 30% or less according to a complex assessment by the rehabilitation authority,
- a person in receipt of a invalidity annuity, a national care allowance or a national merit award,
- a Hungarian citizen repatriated from abroad who receives pension benefits from abroad,
- a clerical person receiving pension assistance,
- a guardian and a person under guardianship, a custodian and a person under custodianship,
- a foster parent in child protection and a child temporarily placed or fostered in his/her care.
A travel voucher is also payable in the case of a suspension of the payment of the entitling benefit.
Validity and data content of the travel voucher
The Travel Voucher for the Beneficiary is issued by the Pension Payment Directorate of the Hungarian State Treasury. The voucher is valid from 1 January of the year of issue until 31 March of the following year of issue. The Pension Payment Directorate shall issue the travel voucher by 31 March of the year in question to beneficiaries who have not reached the age of 65 by 1 April of the year.
The travel voucher shall include the pension registration number, the name and address of the beneficiary. If the beneficiary is under guardianship or custodianship or has been placed with a foster parent, the travel voucher shall be sent to the guardian, custodian or foster parent. The voucher will bear the name of the guardian or custodian or foster parent and the abbreviation "GY"/"GO"/"NS" according to these positions.
What discounts are available with the travel voucher?
From March 1, 2024, the travel voucher entitles to free travel in intercity transport and to purchase a county and national pass with a 90% discount. The Pension Payment Directorate arranged for the issuance and sending of travel vouchers valid until March 31, 2025 to those entitled to them, based on the legislation in force before March 1, 2024. This document, within the validity period indicated on it, is suitable for certifying the right to discounts valid from March 1, 2024. Therefore, after March 1, 2024, discounts according to the information on discounts that can be read on the voucher cannot be used, and from this date the stamp spaces on the back of the voucher will also lose their function.
Can the travel voucher be replaced or exchanged?
The replacement or exchange of the voucher can be requested free of charge from the Pension Payment Directorate.
Notification obligation
A Hungarian citizen repatriated from abroad and in receipt of pension benefits must notify the Pension Payment Directorate of the Hungarian State Treasury within 15 days if they cease to be entitled to pension benefits abroad or if their pension benefits are suspended, if they are granted a pension under the pension agreement based on their service period in Hungary, and if they cease to reside in Hungary.
Guardians, custodians and foster parents must notify the institution if they cease to hold such a position.
